PEI Job Objective and Responsibilities

  • To ensure that prisoner care is of the highest possible standard.
  • With guidance from the Director, Deputy Director, & Heads of Functions, Company Policy and the requirements of the Authority, Policies and Procedures for the effective operation of the Prison.
  • Preventing disturbances, assault and breakouts by supervising activities and work assignments of prisoners
  • Supervising, managing and controlling prisoners lawfully, safely and securely
  • Promoting anti-bullying and suicide prevention policies
  • Being aware of a prisoner's rights and dignity
  • Performing security checks and search procedures on prisoners, staff and visitors
  • Promoting anti-bullying and suicide prevention policies
  • Working with prisoners to help them prepare for release
  • Helping prisoners access support and maintain relationships with professionals such as social workers
  • Maintaining restrictions on prisoners' liberty whilst promoting and protecting their rights in compliance with legislation and company policy and procedures.
  • Maintaining high standards of security and safety at all times, whilst promoting an environment of positive behaviour that supports rehabilitation of prisoners and staff
  • Provide support and care to prisoners aiding with their physical and mental health needs
  • Contribute to the rehabilitation process, helping prisoners to live law-abiding lives upon release.
  • Understands the relationship between trauma and offending and uses a trauma informed approach in all aspects of their work to better support recovery and rehabilitation.
  • Is able to act in accordance with LSS / LOPs whilst being aware of diversity, that not all relationships / family groups / individuals look and act the same way. Forms a judgement on the balance of wide number of factors. 
  • To communicate with individuals clearly and effectively in accordance with need and be able to adjust language and communication style to ensure understanding amongst this prisoner cohort.
  • Understands the relationship between trauma and offending and uses a trauma informed approach in all aspects of their work to better support recovery and rehabilitation.

Main Duties - Operational Responsibilities

  • Supervising, training and reforming individuals who have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to imprisonment Responding to emergencies and incidents, both immediately and as part of incident reviews
  • Within the Reception area you will be responsible for managing the entry and release of offenders from prison, assessing the needs of individual offenders and ensuring the correct procedures are followed. You will be faced with a diverse range of situations, and you will be required to demonstrate care, compassion, dignity and respect in determining the most appropriate course of action.
  • Inspecting facilities to ensure they meet security and safety standards
  • Receive and release individuals and property in line with company procedures to prevent incorrect release or loss/misdirection of property
  • Deal with vulnerable and challenging prisoners in a calm and professional manner to reduce risk and ensure safe and secure environment is always maintained
  • Searching cells and inmates for contraband, and follow legislation and policy and procedures with confiscation to safeguard prisoners and staff
  • Carrying out administrative tasks such as making reports, keeping accurate records of prisoners' behaviour
  • De-escalate situations where necessary encouraging good order and compliance
  • Controlling and monitoring all movement within the prison to ensure safety and security
  • Looking after prisoner's health and well-being, including identifying signs of distress or mental health issues and taking necessary action
  • Build professional relationships with prisoners, staff and visitors by maintaining high levels of integrity in all conversations and actions.
  • Ensuring the routines of the prison operate effectively by supporting a team of PCO's on the main wings, supervising prisoners at mealtimes, and managing regular routines (locking and unlocking)
  • You will be responsible for the safe and secure escorting of offenders throughout the establishment and externally as directed by management i.e. hospital, inter-prison transfer, court procedures as required. Managing the movement of offenders between residential accommodation and other areas of the establishment, such as education, health centre, visit room and offender work areas. You will also be responsible for escorting external contractors and visitors, ensuring the safety and security of individuals, buildings and equipment. You will remain vigilant and confidently deal with emerging issues

Additional PCO Job Responsibilities

As a PCO, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the safety, security, and well-being of prisoners at HMP Millsike. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring high standards of prisoner care and supporting their rehabilitation.
  • Conducting security checks and search procedures on prisoners, staff, and visitors.
  • Promote safer custody and violence reduction.
  • Assisting prisoners in preparing for release by maintaining professional relationships with health and probation services and other professionals.
  • Maintaining high standards of security and safety while promoting a positive, restorative and rehabilitative environment.
  • Providing support and care for prisoners' physical and mental health needs.
  • Using a trauma-informed approach to support prisoners' recovery and rehabilitation.
  • Supervising prisoners' activities and work assignments to prevent disturbances and maintain order.
  • Communicating effectively with prisoners, adapting language and style to ensure understanding.

 

Person Specification

We love to see applications from people who are motivated, hardworking, and willing to learn. Here are the core requirements we are looking for in the PCO role:

  • Basic to intermediate IT skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to interact empathetically with prisoners and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, dignity, and diversity.
  • Previous experience in a custodial or secure environment is preferred but not essential.

Essential Experience

  • Gym Instructor Award Level 2 or equivalent
  • First Aid Trained
  • Health and Safety qualification

Serving prison officers within the HMPPS / Private Estate who do not have a gym instructor qualification but have an interest in becoming a physical education instructor (PEI) within the prison estate are encouraged to submit an application

Preferred Experience

  • Previous relevant experience in a custodial / secure environment
  • Basic-Intermediate IT Skills: g.  Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook + some experience of updating central data systems
  • Has Duke of Edinburgh accreditation

Desired Experience 

  • Manages boundaries by working within the local drug strategy but also having a wider understanding of the recovery agenda such as harm to hope, etc: can establish a sense of safety, rapport and working alliance with prisoners, Forward Trust, Healthcare, and other providers.
  • Ability to proactively establish rapport with prisoners necessary to effective mentorship and support to service users/prisoners striving to remain drug-free.
  • Understanding of active involvement in promoting the value of every individual's uniqueness in a trauma-informed way and the role of the wider recovery community in enhancing genuine human connections as well as supporting recovery objectives. 
  • Ability to adapt to the demands of a dynamic environment with a demonstrable understanding of what it means to be resilient, incorporating problem solving qualities and continuing personal and professional development through learning from errors.
  • Unwavering interest and commitment to participate in the development and implementation of recovery-focused programs or activities while prioritising involvement in creating both a positive, and rehabilitative recovery atmosphere.
  • Ability to use and/or develop motivational interviewing techniques in both one to one's and/or group settings to support prisoners striving to stay in recovery.
