Grounds & Landscaping Supervisor
Salary: £33,880
Mitie Care & Custody (C&C) is driven by a bold vision: to establish HMP Millsike as a place of restoration and rehabilitation, where prisoners can unlock their full potential and make meaningful, positive changes in their lives. We are excited by the opportunity Millsike presents: a blank canvas on which we can paint a bright future for our prisoners. Our mission is clear: to create an environment that empowers, inspires, and supports individuals to re-enter society with hope, purpose, and a life plan. To achieve this, we will set a culture of rehabilitation and restoration underpinned by integrity and high expectations. Prisoners will experience a dramatic shift from traditional prison environments. Millsike will be a vibrant, bustling community, teeming with industry, activity and opportunities for personal growth. Above all, we will ensure our approach offers a deep sense of safety/respect, through a supportive, uplifting environment, that helps prisoners to see their potential and that unlocks a brighter future for all.
Job objectives and responsibilities
The role involves implementing planned and reactive maintenance while monitoring all grounds support activities and equipment. You will execute grounds maintenance tasks and manage grounds operatives, as well as plan and implement landscaping projects.
Safety is a priority, so you will lead and enforce workplace safety practices, ensuring proper use of tools and personal protective equipment (PPE). Compliance with the Company Safety Policy and relevant regulations is essential, along with adherence to Permit to Work Systems.
As a trainer and mentor to prisoner working groups, you will liaise with engineers and subcontractors, proactively addressing client concerns. A thorough understanding of site engineering services and contractual requirements is crucial.
All work must meet Mitie Energy and Technical Services environmental standards to minimize emissions and comply with COSHH requirements. You will also enforce business risk management procedures and may participate in duty standby or emergency response teams.
Supporting best practices and accurately completing documentation on time are important. You will troubleshoot site issues, investigate infrastructure problems, and recommend remedial actions. Coordination with existing systems and effective maintenance of O&M manuals are also part of your responsibilities, along with availability for scheduled and unplanned weekend work.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal skills and be self-motivated. An apprenticeship or equivalent qualification is required, along with certifications such as IOSH or a PA1 and PA6 spraying license. Candidates should have an NVQ Level 2 in Amenity Horticulture (Landscaping) or a Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Horticulture.
A British Safety Council Certificate in COSHH Risk Assessment is essential, as is experience with gritting and spreading practices. A full driving license is necessary, along with a good understanding of smartphone technology to accurately record work activities.
Strong verbal and written communication skills are important, as well as the ability to take notes effectively. The candidate should be a team player, flexible within contracted hours, and computer literate. A proactive and intuitive nature, combined with a ‘can do' attitude, is highly valued.
High moral standards and integrity are crucial, as is the ability to complete all planned preventive maintenance (PPMs) and reactive maintenance on time, ensuring that tasks are closed out in SAP to meet Mitie SLAs. Compliance with company and statutory regulations regarding safe systems of work, health and safety, hygiene, cleanliness, and local fire regulations is required. Additionally, the candidate should consistently meet compliance and EHS standards while supporting the FM Team in achieving site objectives.
