Job Overview

The Trade Assist will be primarily responsible for maintaining and repairing accommodation buildings, including dormitories (COM) and transiting lodging facilities (TLF). In addition to these duties, the role will support general maintenance across the contract, providing flexibility to ensure that all buildings are kept to a high standard of repair. This will involve a variety of tasks including basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, electrical work, and general repairs.

As part of the Minor New Works team, the trade assistant will assist with minor works and coordinate with subcontractors as required. The role includes liaising closely with the Unaccompanied Housing Office (UHO) to manage pre- and post-room inspections, ensuring high service and satisfaction for occupants.

Main Duties

  • Accommodation Building Maintenance: Conduct regular maintenance tasks within dormitories and transiting lodging facilities, ensuring all areas are in good repair and meet required standards.
  • General Base Maintenance: Provide general support for maintenance tasks across the entire RAF base as needed, including basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and general repairs.
  • Subcontractor Coordination: Assist in the coordination of subcontractors when required, ensuring tasks are completed to specification and on time.
  • Minor New Works Support: Work alongside the Minor New Works Supervisor to assist with minor projects, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and that work is completed efficiently.
  • Room Inspections: Collaborate with the Unit Housing Office (UHO) for pre- and post-room inspections, identifying maintenance needs and ensuring swift resolution of issues.
  • Health & Safety Compliance: Adhere to all health and safety regulations and Mitie policies, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and others.
  • Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service to occupants of the accommodation buildings and other personnel across the base, addressing any maintenance concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of work completed, including any maintenance requests or issues raised, and report progress to the Minor New Works Supervisor.

What we are looking for

  • Proven experience in general maintenance, including basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a varied workload.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Previous experience working in a facilities maintenance or similar environment is desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with clients, team members, and subcontractors.
  • Good knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • A proactive, solution-focused approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to work flexibly and support different areas of the base as needed.
  • A relevant trade qualification or equivalent experience is desirable (e.g. City & Guilds, NVQ).
  • Health and Safety awareness or certifications (e.g. CSCS, IOSH) are an advantage.
  • Full UK driving license, as some travel around the base may be required.
