Job Title : Senior Engineering Manager - Mechanical

Location: Liverpool, Merseyside, L12 2AP

Permanent / Full Time / 40 hours

Job Overview:

The Senior Engineering Manager leads the delivery of engineering and estates services for Alder Hey children's Hospital, ensuring compliance with statutory regulations, PFI contracts, and healthcare technical standards (HTMs/HBNs). The role combines strategic planning, operational leadership, and technical oversight to maintain safe, efficient, and high-quality building services

Main Duties:

  • Communicate effectively with managers, directors, engineering teams, and external bodies, including suppliers, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
  • Share policies, procedures, and technical information with Mitie staff and clients.
  • Ensure all statutory, contractual, and compliance requirements for buildings and engineering services are met and fully recorded.
  • Act as Authorised Person in line with Mitie's AP Matrix.Interpret and apply complex technical documents, drawings, and regulatory guidance.Develop and maintain strategic site plans and risk management strategies.
  • Participate in the out‑of‑hours on‑call rota, providing technical and managerial support during incidents.
  • Lead and coordinate staff, promoting strong communication, motivation, and high‑quality service delivery.
  • Uphold safeguarding responsibilities across all service areas.
  • Oversee maintenance, repairs, inspections, and PPM activities for engineering plant and equipment.
  • Ensure specialist surveys and inspections are completed and used to shape maintenance and lifecycle plans.
  • Manage maintenance contracts, ensuring value for money and adherence to specifications.Maintain accurate estate property data and performance records.
  • Ensure effective contingency plans for system failures and drive continuous improvement in engineering services.
  • Manage environmental controls, including water discharge permits and compliance with statutory requirements.Recruit, train, and develop staff, ensuring competency, technical capability, and ongoing professional development.

What we are looking for:

  • Relevant certifications in FM & Engineering or other related fields (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, IWFM).
  • Demonstrated experience in a technical leadership role, preferably within facilities management, particularly in healthcare (HTM01-08).
  • AP qualifications are preferable.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles relevant to the operational context.
  • Experience in managing compliance with standards, processes, and procedures in alignment with Mitie's Safe Systems of Work.
  • Expertise in developing and implementing audit action plans to address non-compliance effectively.
  • Ability to identify early warning signs of technical issues to reduce the likelihood of Non-Compliance Records (NCR).
  • Strong analytical skills to assess labour loads and recommend necessary competency levels for technical roles.
  • Excellent communication skills to engage effectively with diverse teams, including account directors, supply chain partners, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to build relationships and foster collaboration among teams.
  • Strong leadership abilities with a proactive approach to problem-solving and a focus on compliance and operational excellence.
  • Willingness to adapt to changing environments and embrace new challenges.

 

Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) DNA Sample Requirement  : This role may require regular entry to high-risk or forensically clean areas of the SARC at Rainbow.  As such, and as part of our commitment to supporting Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust to maintain the highest forensic standards and comply with UKAS accreditation requirements, the successful candidate will be required to provide a DNA sample to be held on the Staff Elimination Database for the purposes of eliminating your DNA from any forensic samples that may be taken at the SARC.
