Main Purpose of Role: |
To manage a team of directly and indirectly employed design engineers; responsible for providing electrical design at LV-132KV, and technical services to ‘Major Projects' and ‘Customer Networks'. The position holder will be responsible for communicating with customers, the DNO, TNO, manufacturers, suppliers and the construction team to ensure that the design approval process and the design construction process run smoothly and meet the relevant standards applicable. They will, be required to help the construction team interpret designs and conduct audits when necessary to establish and maintain works are at the requisite standard/compliant with the design. The position holder will be required to contribute to business development efforts and support the tendering and construction team as required. |
Key Duties and Responsibilities: |
- Managing a team of directly employed and indirectly employed design engineers and technical specialists. - Working with the ‘Major Projects Operations Manager' and ‘Customer Networks Manager' to ensure their teams capacity and capability match their requirements. - Timely reporting/communication to ‘Major Projects' and ‘Customer Networks' on progress, costs and risks as they evolve. - Responsible for input to project programmes and monitoring of same throughout the design phase. - Creation and sign off, of teams/third party design scope and/or programmes, and subsequent monitoring and control; to ensure works are delivered, to agreed timescales and cost. - Monitoring, control, and communication of work outside of scope that would be a chargeable variation. - Producing monthly reports detailing design progress on each scheme. - Work with Business Development team to assist with estimates and tenders. - Managing competence, training, and development of design team. - Working with clients, Network Operators/Owners (IDNOs, DNOs, TNOs and Private Network operator/owners) to determine and agree responsibilities and scope of design works. - Lead the design of projects and bids as required. - Guide the customer through the design process. - Obtain technical or major procurement item quotations. - Attend design reviews, design team meetings, and project meetings. - Promote and maintain a culture of continuous improvement within the team.

Working within the ‘Design' team supporting ‘Business Development', ‘Tendering', ‘Major Projects' and ‘Customer Networks' deliver their respective programmes of work to time, cost and budget safely. The postholder will have the ability to communicate at all levels and build strong, positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. |

Safety: Lead by example on the design, ensuring designs are compliant with relevant standards and industry best practice. Customer service: Delivering design activities to internal and external customers in accordance with budget, project timeline, applicable standards, and industry bets practice.
People: managing a team of circa. 2 direct employees and circa. 2 indirect employees to support the work programmes of ‘Major Projects' and ‘Customer Networks' and ‘Business Development' and ‘Tendering' as required. Liaison with internal and external stakeholders to include clients, contractors' and colleagues. |
Qualifications and Experience: |
The person required will be highly mobile, motivated, knowledgeable with demonstrable practical knowledge of electrical network design from LV through to 123KV and commercially astute. With a proven track record of supporting teams in a demanding client-focused environment. The ability to work under pressure and achieve challenging deadlines is essential. Demonstrable ability to build good working relationships both within ESM Power and with external customers.
Essential Qualifications, Skills/Criteria: · Minimum Level 4 (HNC) Electrical Engineering Qualification and or demonstrable practical knowledge in a similar role. Degree level qualification desirable. · Demonstrable high-level knowledge of electrical design standards, policies and procedures associated with the installation and commissioning of electrical equipment from LV through to 132kv. · Management qualification and/or demonstrable practical knowledge of managing a team of minimum of 3 people. · Good written, verbal and presentation skills. · Pro-active, self-starter, enthusiastic, flexible and able to motivate staff. · Can manage multiple stakeholder relationships. · Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word and Excel Personal Characteristics: · Supportive team player with the ability to positively interact with both technical and commercially orientated staff, possibly outside own area of expertise. · Strong organizational and work management skills. · Excellent influencing and communication skills coupled with the ability to engage with staff at all levels in the organization. · Versatile, adaptable, willing to learn and transfer knowledge and develop others. · Attention to detail, flair for solving engineering problems in a cost effective and technically appropriate manner, seeking out opportunities for value engineering. |
