ROLE: Primary Design Engineer
HOURS: 40 Hours
LOCATION: Hybrid (travel across the UK)

We're looking for an experienced Primary Design Engineer to support the delivery of high‑voltage renewables projects by producing specialist earthing designs and electrical substation layouts that meet stringent technical, safety and regulatory standards. 

 
Role Responsibilities
  • Produce electrical layouts for substations, including AIS and GIS up to 132kV, cable route layout drawings and sections, LV layouts, switch room and control room layouts, and earthing layouts.
  • Ensure design compliance with all relevant British and International Standards, legislation, Customer requirements, DNO standards and contract specifications. 
  • Review tender and contract documentation, establish primary electrical scope of work and prepare design deliverables. 
  • Produce substation layout drawings for 11kV, 22kV, 33kV, 66kV and 132kV AIS/GIS substations, as well as BoP/EPC site layouts for renewable and battery projects
  • Design and analyse earthing systems for substations, renewable sites and grid connections, acting as named earthing engineer where required
  • Conduct soil resistivity testing, EPR studies, touch/step voltage assessments and fall‑of‑potential testing. 
  • Produce earthing documentation including fall‑of‑potential reports, impressed voltage study reports and lightning risk assessments in accordance with BS 62305‑2. 
  • Specify materials for above‑ and below‑ground earthing and lightning protection. 
  • Manage external design suppliers and interface effectively with structural, planning and CAD teams. 
  • Produce accurate technical reports, drawings, calculations and major plant specifications (e.g., disconnectors). 
 
Required Qualifications (Applicants must meet the following requirements for the role):
  • Degree, HND or HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred). 
  • Proven experience in primary electrical design for HV/EHV AC substations (11kV–132kV) and BoP projects. 
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards including BS7671, ENATS, NGTS, BS EN 61936‑1 and BS7354. 
  • Experience working within consultancy, contractor or utility environments. 
  • Strong understanding of cable installation practices, including bending radii and installation requirements. 
  • Ability to manage complex design interfaces across multiple engineering disciplines. 
  • Ability to interpret, write and review technical documentation relating to substation plant and equipment
  • Knowledge of designer duties under CDM Regulations 2015

 

Desirable:

  • Experience with 3D CAD tools (e.g., Revit) and CDEGS earthing modelling software.

  • Proactive, self‑motivated and able to work independently as well as within multidisciplinary teams. 
  • Strong technical problem‑solving skills and ability to resolve complex engineering challenges. 
  • Excellent communication skills for engaging stakeholders and producing clear documentation. 
  • Highly organised with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet project deadlines
