Major Project Manager – Electrical Infrastructure (up to 132kV)


Main Purpose of Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to lead the delivery of electrical infrastructure projects ranging from LV through to 132kV, with an annual portfolio value of circa £20m.

You will manage a multifunctional team of project managers, site managers, commercial staff, planners, and construction teams to ensure the safe, timely, and cost-effective installation and commissioning of major projects. The role also involves engaging with clients, DNOs, TNOs, IDNOs, manufacturers, and suppliers to ensure seamless delivery in line with industry standards.

In addition to delivery responsibilities, you will contribute to business development, tendering support, and innovation initiatives to improve safety, quality, project margins, and timescales.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage directly employed and subcontracted project and construction teams.

  • Deliver successful installation and commissioning of electrical systems up to and including 132kV, ensuring projects meet milestones, budgets, and safety standards.

  • Ensure compliance with ESM and third-party safety rules for all operations.

  • Manage project programmes, monitor progress, and report on costs, risks, and performance.

  • Approve and monitor third-party construction scopes and programmes to ensure timely, safe, and cost-effective delivery.

  • Control and communicate variations to scope and associated costs.

  • Produce accurate and timely monthly progress reports.

  • Support business development and tendering teams with estimates and proposals.

  • Oversee training, competence, authorisation, and auditing of operational and construction resources.

  • Liaise with DNOs, TNOs, IDNOs, and private network operators to agree responsibilities, scope, and compliance.

  • Ensure contestable works meet DNO/TNO standards and witness commissioning where required.

  • Promote and lead a strong Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) culture across all project phases.


Job Context & Key Challenges

  • Delivering a portfolio of major projects with responsibility for safety, budget, KPIs, and customer satisfaction.

  • Leading by example on safety during all electrical construction and installation activities.

  • Managing a team of ~6 direct employees and multiple subcontractors while maintaining strong stakeholder relationships.

  • Ensuring construction/installation activities meet budget, timeline, and system requirements.


Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Minimum HNC (Level 4) in Electrical Engineering (Degree desirable).

  • Proven knowledge of electrical network standards, policies, and procedures up to 132kV.

  • Strong track record in managing installation and commissioning of major electrical projects.

  • Demonstrable leadership and management skills (minimum team size 5).

  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Commercially astute with experience in cost and risk management.

Desirable:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.

  • Management qualification.

  • Experience in business development and tendering support.
