This is an opportunity to manage a varied programme of construction, infrastructure, refurbishment and additional works supporting UK Defence operations on Ascension Island.

The role is broader than a conventional Construction Manager position. One day you may be developing a scope for a small improvement project; the next you could be coordinating an electrical refurbishment, temporary accommodation installation or major building upgrade.

We are looking for a versatile construction professional who can take projects from initial client requirement through design, procurement, delivery and handover.

The Role

Reporting to the Commercial Manager, you will manage construction, refurbishment, infrastructure and minor works projects throughout their full lifecycle.

You will be responsible for producing detailed scopes of work, coordinating design and procurement, and ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.

You will also manage a Directly Employed Minor Works team of operatives and provide technical leadership, mentoring and training to Project Managers and junior staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a varied portfolio of construction, infrastructure and minor works projects.
• Produce clear, detailed and deliverable scopes of work, specifications and project briefs.
• Undertake site surveys, feasibility studies, option appraisals and course-of-action reports.
• Review drawings, specifications, surveys and consultant designs.
• Coordinate consultants, designers, contractors and specialist subcontractors.
• Manage projects through the relevant RIBA design and delivery stages.
• Lead and manage the Directly Employed Minor Works team.
• Plan and allocate labour, materials, plant and equipment.
• Prepare construction programmes, resource plans and delivery strategies.
• Ensure works comply with CDM, Building Regulations, MOD standards and company procedures.
• Manage construction activities within live operational environments.
• Work with the commercial team on estimating, procurement, forecasting and change control.
• Liaise with clients and end users throughout project development and delivery.
• Coordinate testing, commissioning, snagging, completion and handover.
• Ensure complete O&M manuals, as-built drawings, test certificates, warranties and asset information are submitted to FM and maintenance teams.
• Mentor, train and develop Project Managers, supervisors and junior staff.
• Build strong relationships with DIO, MOD stakeholders, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors.

What We Are Looking For

Essential

• Degree, HNC, HND, NVQ Level 6 or Level 7 in Construction Management, Building, Civil Engineering or a related discipline or equivalent experience.
• Significant experience managing construction, refurbishment, infrastructure or minor works projects.
• A broad construction background across multiple disciplines.
• Proven ability to produce comprehensive and technically accurate scopes of work.
• Experience managing projects from initial scope through to completion and handover.
• Experience managing directly employed construction operatives and subcontractors.
• Strong knowledge of CDM, Building Regulations and the RIBA Plan of Work.
• Experience reviewing drawings, designs and technical information.
• Strong understanding of construction sequencing, buildability and site logistics.
• Experience managing project safety, quality, programme and cost.
• Experience producing and reviewing O&M and handover documentation.
• Experience mentoring and developing Project Managers or junior staff.
• Strong leadership, communication and organisational skills.
• Full UK driving licence or equivalent.
• Ability to obtain the required medical, security and work-permit clearances.

Desirable

• Chartered membership of CIOB, RICS or another relevant professional body, or working towards professional qualification.
• SMSTS or equivalent health and safety qualification.
• Experience working with NEC contracts.
• Experience within Defence, facilities management or a regulated environment.
• Experience working in remote or logistically constrained locations.
