Forensic Psychologist in Training 

Salary - £37,000

As a Forensic Psychologist in Training, you will work directly with prisoners, staff and various stakeholders under the supervision of a Registered Forensic Psychologist. You will undertake a variety of work, including conducting research to gain experience and develop competency in working towards qualification as a Registered Forensic Psychologist.  

The main duties of a Forensic Psychologist in Training will include (under supervision):  

• Completing psychological risk assessments for the parole board  

• Completing psychological assessment such as WAIS assessment for various stakeholders 

• Acting as a professional witness at Parole Board hearings.  

• Contribute to the delivery and achievement of all performance measures, contract outcomes and locally agreed targets including KPI's/CDIs this may include delivery of and providing supervision of accredited offending behaviour programmes such as Building Choices depending on business need 

• Ensure operational and administrative duties, including the collection and maintenance of data are completed in accordance with HCPC guidelines, GDPR and Data Protection Act, Prison policies and procedures.   

• Designing, delivering and evaluating bespoke formulation-driven interventions to support an individual sentence plan and reducing reoffending 

• Speaking with stakeholders and completing research as outlined by the business need and in line with HCPC guidelines following all necessary ethical approvals.  

• Providing psychological consultancy to various stakeholder and function by attending meetings, providing case file reviews and completing psychological formulations to assist with problem solving in relation to supporting violence reduction and creating a safer prison.  

• Working with stakeholders to identify training needs of various staffing groups to support the business needs and priorities of the prison. This is likely to involve conducting training needs analysis, writing, delivering and evaluating training. 

• Providing supervision to other professionals as and when required and in line with business need and priorities of the prison.  

• Develop, review and maintain Psychologically informed Policies and Procedures for the effective operation of the Prison in line with stakeholder needs and business priorities.  

• Responsible for ensuring psychology files are logged and stored in accordance with HCPC, GDPR and Data Protection Act.  

• Responsible for responding to prisoner applications in a timely manner ensuring all communications are undertaken in according with HCPC guidelines  

• Responsible for attending and engaging meaningfully with co-ordinating and any other supervision  

• Responsible for maintaining own learning and engaging meaningfully with the requirements of the BPS Stage 2 Qualification in Forensic Psychology.  

• Responsible for completing assessments following referrals to Psychology and attending MDT meetings and recording and communicating outcomes of such meetings.  

Forensic Psychologists in Training employed by Mitie Care and Custody may undertake training via one of several accredited routes and financial provision will be made towards the costs of the recognised registration route. FPiT's will be provided with a range of opportunities to progress and are expected to use these to the best advantage of their training and development.  They are responsible for ensuring they are constantly progressing to the level of a registered psychologist.   

This is a non-operational job with no line management or supervisory responsibilities, however as part of your qualification you will need to demonstrate evidence of some level of supervisory skills which may be linked to areas such as keyworker, prison offender manager or accredited offending behaviour facilitator practice.

Essential Experience and Qualifications.  

• MSc or MA Degree in Forensic Psychology which is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) or evidence of completing Stage 1 of the BPS Qualification in Forensic Psychology.  

• Current member or eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartered membership (GBC) 

• Some experience of working in forensic or mental health settings  

• Some experience of delivering group or individual interventions using psychological models.  

• Good knowledge of the value of supervision and experience of being a supervisee  

• Experience of conducting research  

Preferred Experience  

• Experience of delivering individual interventions within a forensic setting  

• Knowledge and experience of delivering HMPPS accredited offending behaviour programmes.  

• Some experience of communicating highly sensitive and complex psychological information to non-psychologists 

• Experience which demonstrates capacity to work in emotionally challenging environments and maintain performance when under pressure.
