As a Service Funds Clerk on Ascension Island, you will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of Service Funds accounts, supporting effective financial management and reporting.

This is an accounts-focused role covering transaction processing, reconciliations and financial reporting within a unique Defence environment.

The Role

You will maintain and administer Service Funds accounts using appropriate accounting systems, processing transactions and supporting reporting, reconciliations, management checks and audits.

As part of the wider Accounts team, you will also provide cover for other Accounts roles when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain Service Funds accounts and accurate, auditable supporting records using relevant accounting software and systems.
  • Process financial transactions and journals in accordance with required procedures.
  • Prepare monthly accounts, statements and other routine financial information.
  • Complete bank reconciliations, investigating and resolving discrepancies as required.
  • Support month-end and year-end accounting activities and associated reporting requirements.
  • Provide training, guidance and support to colleagues responsible for individual Service Funds, including the use of accounting systems and required accounting procedures.
  • Prepare information and documentation for management checks and audits.
  • Assist with banking and other financial administration where required.
  • Handle financial, personal and sensitive information appropriately, maintaining confidentiality and information security.
  • Provide cover for the Cashier, Public Accounts Clerk and the PA to the Commander Ascension Island Base during periods of absence or operational need, following appropriate training and authorisation.
  • Undertake other reasonable duties as required.

What We Are Looking For

Essential
  • Relevant experience in accounts, finance, bookkeeping or financial administration.
  • Good understanding of routine accounting processes, including reconciliations and financial record keeping.
  • Strong numeracy skills with good attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good IT capabilities, including confidence using Microsoft Office, spreadsheets and accounting or administrative systems.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage priorities and meet financial deadlines.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to provide training and guidance to colleagues.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • A high level of integrity and professionalism when handling financial information.
Desirable
  • Experience using SAGE accounting software.
  • Previous experience preparing monthly accounts or financial statements, or supporting month-end and year-end processes.
  • Previous experience of Defence, Public Accounts or Service Funds procedures.
  • A full UK driving licence or recognised equivalent.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake the relevant Service Funds training, which can be completed virtually following appointment. Defence-specific procedures and systems can be learnt in post, and previous military experience is not essential.
