The need for energy and climate change resilience has never been more urgent. Ramping up renewable generation, accelerating energy diversification and increasing energy storage are global priorities amid heightened geopolitical tensions, supply chain shortages, an increase in extreme weather events and soaring natural gas prices.

We support clients decarbonise their energy, their buildings and their infrastructure, and you will play a key part in this mission by advising clients on net zero strategies and initiatives to support their decarbonisation agendas.

Our Ambition is to become the market leader in the digital & sustainable transformation of estates and infrastructure. Through digitally enabled Decentralised Energy Resources and Smart Local Energy Systems we will increase customer resilience and accelerate the net zero journey.

We are seeking a highly experienced and passionate Principal Consultant – Net Zero Estates and Infrastructure to lead and drive our digitally enabled sustainability and decarbonisation strategies across large-scale estates and infrastructure projects. This role will play a critical part in advising public and private sector clients on achieving net zero goals, climate adaptation and resilience, developing sustainable infrastructure, implementing cutting-edge solutions for carbon reduction, innovative funding models and securing incremental revenue streams from energy flexibility.

What will you do day to day?

As part of the role, you will be expected to establish a long-term trusted advisor relationships with clients and communicate with business decision makers at all levels to identify needs and requirements. This will involve building internal networks across key Mitie teams to maximise opportunity for client engagement. The role may require managing and mentoring staff within the project delivery teams to aid their personal development. Awareness of health, safety, and sustainability in all aspects of the role is essential. 

This role requires significant experience and deep expertise in sustainability, climate adaptation, energy transition and broader decarbonisation solutions, as well as knowledge of how integrated energy and carbon reduction strategies can support net zero plans. You will be responsible for delivering engagements that results in clear pathways for investment in projects to decarbonise our customer's built environment. 

You will be expected to sell billable advisory engagements to be delivered by the pool of consulting resource, owning the respective client relationships and ultimately being accountable for outputs and delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Business Development: Support business growth by identifying new opportunities, developing proposals, and expanding our net zero service offerings. Development of sales pipeline and deliver £1m in consulting revenue. This includes sales strategies (customer or sector focused)
  2. Strategic Leadership: Develop and lead the delivery of net zero strategies for estates and infrastructure projects across various sectors, ensuring alignment with regulatory frameworks and sustainability targets.
  3. Define value proposition working with Mitie Power & Grid, Renewables, Digital and Facilities Transformation teams. Identify new Net Zero Estates and Infrastructure Consultancy services.
  4. Build, develop and manage a team of Senior Managers, Consultants and Analysts in line with the business plan.
  5. Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government bodies, industry leaders, and community groups, to drive collaborative solutions.
  6. Client Advisory: Act as a trusted advisor for clients, providing expert guidance on decarbonization, energy efficiency, and carbon management strategies.
  7. Project Management: Oversee complex projects from inception to completion, managing budgets, timelines, and stakeholder engagement while ensuring high-quality delivery.
  8. Technical Expertise: Apply best practices in digitally enables sustainable infrastructure, energy transition, circular economy principles, and climate resilience to create innovative solutions.
  9. Policy and Compliance: Stay ahead of industry regulations, policy developments, and emerging trends to ensure compliance with local, national, and global net zero commitments.

Qualifications

  • University degree in a relevant field (preferably Masters) – e.g. Engineering, Environmental Science, Business, Sustainability

Experience & Skills

  • Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) in sustainability consulting, infrastructure planning, or net zero strategy implementation.
  • In-depth knowledge of integrated decentralised energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies, and sustainable design principles.
  • Proven ability to lead large-scale sustainability projects and develop long-term net zero roadmaps.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks, ESG reporting, and industry best practices related to net zero infrastructure.
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen to understand and develop 3rd party funding solutions, grant funding and incremental revenue streams.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience influencing decision-makers at senior levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex sustainability challenges into actionable solutions.
  • Experience of working closely with clients and building long-term relationships
  • Deep understanding of drivers and challenges of the decarbonisation mega trend as well as a view on the evolution of the market
  • Independent thinker, with excellent customer facing skills and the ability to build relationships both internally and with senior stakeholders of major clients
  • Ability to lead engagements and client conversations with no oversight
  • Experience leading and developing teams aligned to a common goal
  • Sound MS Office skills including Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Experience in business development, proposal writing, and client relationship management.
