Job Overview
As a Plumbing and Oil Heating Engineer, you will work as part of a skilled and dedicated team, including Plumbers, Electricians, Carpenters, Painters, Cleaners, Administrators, and other professionals. Together, we are committed to creating a safe, secure, and well-maintained environment for all.
Your responsibilities will include the installation, inspection, diagnosis of faults/leaks, testing, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and oil heating systems across a diverse range of buildings on site.
Main Duties
Carry out planned, reactive, and emergency maintenance on mechanical systems, including boilers, heating, plumbing, and medium temperature hot water services.
Install, service, and replace components such as pumps, valves, taps, cylinders, and calorifiers.
Ensure all equipment and systems operate within specified parameters and comply with relevant legal and regulatory standards.
Perform both planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive tasks to a consistently high standard.
Undertake inspections and testing of plant and portable equipment.
Accurately interpret engineering and building drawings/specifications with a thorough understanding of mechanical-electrical system interactions.
Accurately complete all work-related documentation, including inspection logs, remedial reports, labour records, and overtime sheets.
Maintain compliance with Health and Safety regulations and policies, including COSHH, Electricity at Work, Legionella, and Asbestos guidelines.
Contribute to the operational risk register and promote a culture of continuous improvement.
Liaise effectively with both technical and non-technical staff across all levels.
Collaborate with the Technical Supervisor to ensure comprehensive and coordinated maintenance services.
Communicate clearly with clients, addressing queries, reporting defects, and providing real-time updates during site visits.
Work professionally and safely in hazardous environments, following all relevant protocols and procedures.
Ensure all work is completed efficiently and to a high standard, producing quality results with no rework required.
Organise work to minimise downtime and improve productivity.
Willingness to undertake tasks outside of core trade responsibilities following appropriate training.
Perform other duties as directed by your line manager or the management team.
What we are looking for
Essential Qualifications and Experience
GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
Gas Safe registered and ACS certified (LPG Commercial).
OFTEC qualified.
City & Guilds qualifications in relevant disciplines
EAL Diploma in Plumbing and Heating.
CITB training qualifications.
Experience
Minimum 2 years' experience in plumbing or a related role.
Proven background in maintenance or facilities management, ideally in a technical environment.
Practical experience with:
- Oil-fired domestic and industrial boilers
- Plumbing and heating system installation and maintenance
- Cylinders, calorifiers, and associated pipework
- Electrical control systems, including PLCs and hardwired systems
- Compressors, compressed air systems, and steam boilers
Strong understanding of planned preventive maintenance (PPM).
Knowledge & Skills
Working knowledge of:
Health and safety legislation, policies, and procedures (COSHH, Asbestos, Electricity at Work, etc.)
Permit to Work systems and Safe Systems of Work
Statutory compliance and building regulations
Heating, ventilation, plumbing, refrigeration, and building services systems
Strong communication and problem-solving abilities.
Capable of producing quality work first time, with no rework required.
Other Requirements
Full, clean, and valid UK driving licence.
Capable of obtaining MOD Basic Security Clearance.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
Holds or has held Authorised Person (Electrical) qualifications.
ATEX/DESEAR/COMPEX trained and certified.
Holds or is working towards 18th Edition City & Guilds IEE Wiring Regulations.
Holds City & Guilds 2391 Electrical Testing & Inspection.
Unvented qualification with practical experience on hot water/heating systems.
Unvented Water Heater Vessel Course (G3)
IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent health and safety qualification.
Qualify for entry into the Skilled Persons Register.
Experience working within a Ministry of Defence (MOD) environment.
Familiarity with Water Supply Regulations and Control of Legionella (L8).
