Job Overview

To undertake carpentry and joinery works on the full range of Ascension Island Base buildings and sites. To ensure all work undertaken is completed with due regard for quality, productivity and safety. Maintain high standards of personal presentation.

Main Duties

• Prepare wood work on machines for shuttering, form work, window frames, door cases etc.
• Prepare surfaces, lay tiles and other flooring.
• Fit or replace wall tiles, ceilings, roof sheeting, ridging, eaves, guttering and down pipes.
• Fill defects, cracks, seams, depressions or nail holes etc with filler etc and apply stain or paint to touch up the repaired area.
• Repair or replace defective locks, hinges, windows, doors and closes etc.
• Manufacture stud work or assemble prefabricated goods in accordance with specification sheets and drawings determining style and type of structure required.
• Erect scaffold and towers as required for inspection by trained personnel.
• Maintenance, repair and installation of garden fencing.
• Complete work dockets and weekly timesheets.
• Carry out other work of which you are capable and for which you have trained or will receive training from the Company.
• Promote Mitie's professional image in all liaisons with the customer and outside agencies.

What we are looking for

• Must have City & Guilds, BTEC, NVQ or equivalent in joinery qualifications or equivalent experience.
• Experience of working in a carpenter's workshop and on associated machinery.
• Proficient in maintaining building fixture and fittings.
• Health and safety qualifications.
• Manual handling experience.
• Experience of working on a military base desirable but not essential.
• Full driving licence.
• Has a ‘can do' mature attitude.  Is flexible, reliable and self-motivated; will have an open approach, pass on knowledge, share experience and show willingness to assist others.
• Will develop positive, supportive working relationships with team and colleagues.
• Will be well-organised, a motivated team player who is keen to learn.
• Has ability to work on own with minimal supervision and will take responsibility for own actions.
• Will prioritise workload and meet deadlines.
• Capable of recording work accurately on work sheets.
• Regards personal and plant safety as priority.
• Willingness to undertake further training.
• Keenness to pro-actively improve house keeping.

Additional information

The role will be based at the MOD estate at Travellers Hill, Ascension Island.
Mitie will pay a salary, monthly site allowance and a bonus at the 12th and 24th month. Hours of work are 47.5 per week. The contract duration is 24 months unaccompanied with 80 days leave excluding weekends. Air transport for agreed holiday periods will be at Company's expense. Free accommodation, meals at mess and work clothing will be provided. Tax free status on island.
